Preschool, kids ages 3 to 4 are being sent to preschool programs throughout the United States. Some parents paying thousands of dollars to send their children to private preschools. Those who are fortunate to live in an area that has public preschool and they qualify for it, are likely to send their children to school for a half or full day program.
Why are parents suddenly jumping to send their 3 and 4 year olds off into a brick and mortar school when historically it was not done?
The world of education has transformed, and for children to keep up in school it is important that these 3 and 4 year olds start off kindergarten with basic educational skill sets.
Some of these things include shapes, numbers, basic pencil holding skills, colors, the alphabet and their names.
These skills are crucial to the educational success of a child.
I always find it intriguing when someone asks me what curriculum we use for my 3 year old. The answer is incredibly simple, I don’t.
Preschool in our house is all about hands on fun infused with learning. If we are painting, we emphasize the different colors. When we eat a snack after lunch, we count how many blueberries or crackers we have. We dance and sing the alphabet. The only area that we utilize various worksheets is for handwriting and coloring. I prefer to make our own worksheets so it is tailored around my little guys interest, but there is no curriculum utilized for his education at this point.
Curriculum can be expensive, and at this age and stage, I do not deem it necessary!
Did you know that preschool and kindergarten are not mandatory in majority of the United States?
Many are under the impression that they need to jump and get a formal education going right away. I do not believe in this method.
“Play is the highest form of research”
Children learn while playing. Preschool should be play based and education infused. Don’t feel like you need to go spend top dollar on a curriculum, or feel like you have to spend thousands on a preschool education. If you want to tackle preschool based skills at home, it is totally doable.
