What is unschooling? It is almost the complete opposite of traditional school.
In a traditional learning setting kids are sitting in desks and listening and learning from a teacher positioned somewhere in the classroom. They are completing worksheets and learning with their peers.
Unschooling is hands on learning, much like you would see in field trips, except you can do it for every subject, every unit and in a variety of ways!
We utilize unschooling a lot, especially in subjects like science and history. There is so much freedom in the homeschooling, because nothing else can quite compare.
What reasons do we have for loving unschooling in particular?
I am able to teach the kids in a way they best learn. My kids excel from hands on learning. They thrive on learning by seeing, doing, and touching. This cannot happen by just reading a text book. We take history on the road and visit historical sites to learn about our country. For science we visit science centers, so they are able to learn in a way that no one else can provide. They see it isn’t all just about getting good grades and reading a book!
It shows them real life application. I remember when I was learning fractions and I thought “when the heck am I going to need this?”. Now, we learn fractions by baking, or cooking. Maybe the kids will cut a pizza or a pie in half, or a fourth. We learn in ways that are relevant.
This is because when something is made relevant, it is easier to remember.
They learn why education is really important. In school I always thought I wouldn’t use anything that I was learning. In many ways I was right, but that’s because I didn’t end up in that career path. However, because my children are able to see the practical application within so many things, they have gained a greater appreciation and love for learning.
They understand why it is important to obtain an education beyond being told they just have to.
With unschooling we are able to focus on their interests in a real life way. Reading books has the ability to bring us to places that we may not otherwise go, but children often love a hands on approach. This could mean a trip to the zoo, planting a garden, heading to a museum or visiting a bee keeper.
Whatever interest they focus in on and want to learn about, you can find a way to teach it without a traditional curriculum.
It lets children learn without realizing they are learning. Mentally, we are only able to sit and preform workbook work for so long, and even as adults it can become mentally exhausting. Unschooling allows for more frequent breaks in-between curriculum work. The kids believe they are just getting a day off of school because they’re having fun. In reality they are having a full lesson in a nontraditional way.
With unschooling many times as a parent you may not feel as though your children are learning with unschooling, but then they will tell you facts that you are shocked they remember. Unschooling takes a bit more lesson planning than traditional curriculum styles, but it is beyond worth it.
Unschooling is an untraditional approach, so the results are going to look different than those who are following a written curriculum.
THIS IS OKAY!
Not everyone learns the same, or at the same rate. Some children will excel in math, some will excel in english. It is important to have a well rounded education, and with unschooling you can take tailor their education to their interests. This will make it fun for them!
One of my children is insistent that she will become a vet. She wants to learn all she can about animals. We frequent the zoo for a hands on approach, and chat with a lot of the zookeepers. Throuhgout her reading assignments, they are typically reading assignments that are all about animals.
With so many ways to apply the unschooling mindset, there really is no limit to what you can do!
If you feel this is an approach you want to take, and need help navigating, I am here. I know it can be intimidating not following a traditional teaching method, but with enough motivation and determination, it can be done.
